Dancefest - A Busy Summer Of Dance


This summer's getting very busy and we wanted to let you know about some of the things we have coming up in the next few weeks.
Dancefest do the Jiving Lindy Hop at Upton Jazz Festival

Dancefest's Fusion youth group have teamed up with the Best of Young Jazz (BoYJ) to work with internationally acclaimed Swing dance company, The Jiving Lindy Hoppers, to create a performance for Upton Jazz Festival.

They'll be part of the parade at 11.30am and will perform at 1.45pm and 3pm near the BoYJ stage - come along to see them if you're heading to the festival!

Audition for W'ire Youth Dance Company (Year 7 to 21 years old)
The audition takes place this Thursday 25 June at 7-8pm at Bishop Perowne CE Performing Arts College, Worcester, WR3 8LE

W'ire (Worcestershire) Youth Dance Company has been running since September 2003 and has earned a reputation for excellence. It's for motivated dancers with creative and technical potential who want to improve their skills and perform.
 
 
Do you have any unwanted toys or games?

We’re taking part in a fundraising bazaar organised by Worcester Rotary Club on 5 September and we’re aiming to raise money to buy new equipment for our children’s classes.

If you have any toys and games that you no longer want, we'd be ever so grateful for them. You can drop them at The Angel Centre in Worcester or give them to your dance teacher. If you have any questions, please email Poppy. We’ll be collecting things until the end of this term.

An evening of work by youth dance companies including Flexus, Man Made Youth Company, ACE Youth, RDC Youth, W’ire and Elevate.

mac birmingham is one of Britain’s most exciting arts centres.  mac’s mission is to promote innovative, creative arts activities in ways which help to establish them as an important part of people’s lives. With its annual programme of performances, exhibitions, film screenings and educational workshops mac attracts almost 1 million visits a year from people of all ages. Set in the outstanding Cannon Hill Park close to Birmingham’s city centre, mac plays a unique role in Birmingham’s cultural development. Details of mac’s current programmes can be found here.
   
mac is recruiting for the position of chair of its board of Trustees. The Trustees / Directors of mac are seeking an outstanding individual with the appropriate personality, leadership skills and experience to lead and provide direction to the board, to enable the boards’ members to fulfil their responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organisation and to ensure mac’s values are reflected in the Board’s activities and key decisions.
   
The Chair will work in partnership with the Chief Executive, giving guidance and support and optimising the relationship between board members and the staff. The Chair will also be available to promote opportunities for and advocate on behalf of mac.
   
Our Trustees are drawn from Birmingham and the West Midlands region and in addition to their personal skills and experience, contribute professional expertise which is relevant to mac, whether in governance, cultural and arts production, community engagement, learning and participation, marketing, fund-raising, legal and financial matters. All Trustees are volunteers and give their time without any remuneration.

Get Creative Family Arts Festival (9 October – 1 November)

Just to remind you that listings for the national Get Creative Family Arts Festival (9 October – 1 November) launch this Monday. If you haven’t already, do add event listings today in order to benefit from the national marketing and PR campaign that will surround next week’s launch.
Whether it’s an event that is specifically aimed at families or one with a wider audience, but at which families (perhaps those with older children) would be welcome, anything that an under 16 and an over 16 could attend together, that includes an arts element, and that takes place between 9 October and 1 November, is eligible to be included.
We’ve developed the Festival as an opportunity to reach new audiences and to show your commitment to families – I hope you will be able to join us!

WAP - What's coming up....


I thought I would update you on the next few meetings:

First up is Voices and Visions – Our Talent, Our Future which will look at developing a new arts offer for our schools in the county work. This is taking place on Thursday 2nd of July at The University of Worcester, Drama Dept from 2-4pm or 5-7pm. Featuring guest speakers Steve Ball and Rob Elkington this is a must for those who are working or plan to work with children and young people.

 
We have two further Voices and Visions linked projects taking place, these are The Upper Schools Poetry Slam at The Artrix in Bromsgrove on Wednesday 8th July and on the 9th July we are supporting Dancefest with the Worcestershire Schools Dance project, also at Artix.

 
Friday 10th July sees our next WAP steering group which is for Steering Group members only. Venue the Hive at 11am.

 
Friday 17th July sees the next festivals meeting, taking place at The Hive at 10am where we will have guest speakers looking at Crowdfunding as well as writing a Grants for the Arts. This is a really useful practical session for those interested in fundraising and bid writing.

 
Wednesday 22nd July is the next New Prescription meeting at 10am to 12 noon. Details to follow!

Delivery Plan for 2015/16

 

Worcestershire Arts Partnership (WAP) brings organisations together to champion the arts in the county and to create a more sustainable future for the sector. It has made significant progress since its formation in 2009 to lead on the County Arts Strategy, ‘The Arts Matter’.  It now has over 200 followers on social media, has around 80 members who attend events and networking meetings and  includes individual artists, arts venues, festivals and larger arts organisations, health commissioners, schools, tourism and many more with a strong interest in what the arts can do for the county and how arts organisations can sustain into the future.  Led by a Steering Group, representing local authorities, the University, individual artists and large arts organisations WAP has 4 sub-groups who carry out innovative and exciting collaborative projects on cross-cutting subjects bringing the arts to people across the county.

 

Some highlights of WAP’s achievements last year include:

·         ‘Arts Chat’ – a county-wide project placing young people at the heart of creating, producing and curating art for themselves, led by the Children and Young People sub-group working together with Beatfreeks and supported by Arts Connect

·         ‘Art of Festivals’ – training session for arts organisations interested in developing arts festivals, that has led to the creation of a new festivals collaboration

·         ‘Arts in Health’ conference showcasing best practice in arts in health commissioning regionally and starting to broker links within Worcestershire between arts and health providers

·         ‘Moving on, Staying On’ – an event run in collaboration with the University of Worcester, providing advice and work opportunities to final year arts students

·         ‘Jump-start’ – performance showcases at The Cube, Malvern, featuring the work of local writers, directors and actors

 

Some tasters for the year to come include:

·         Working with Arts Connect and the county’s schools to create teacher and young people arts ambassadors to re-establish a new and exciting arts offer the county’s young people and schools, both grant maintained and academy.

·         Event with Worcester Live on developing business philanthropy for the arts

·         Development of  Ring arts project with the Canals and Rivers Trust

·         Improve WAP’s advocacy role; be a strong voice for the arts in Worcestershire

·         Work with the National Cultural Commissioning team to help broker public sector commissioning opportunities

·         Two performance showcases working with theatre practitioners in the county delivered through the Jump Start programme

 

This Delivery Plan takes the form of 6 action plans, which are:

5.    Events and Festivals

6.    Promotion of the WAP

 

How do we work?

Each action plan has a lead representative, usually the relevant sub-group chair, who works with the WAP’s Vice-Chair to ensure the outcomes are regularly monitored and are being delivered. 

WAP is all about achieving positive outcomes through collaboration.  By working together we can raise the profile of the arts and the role the arts can play in all areas of public policy.  We have generated funding for a range of arts projects and we regularly provide the opportunity for those from non-arts sectors to come to one place and meet a range of arts organisations who can deliver their outcomes.  WAP celebrates high quality art and aims to nurture artists and arts organisations to develop a fantastic arts offer for the whole county.    We work in a non-hierarchical way with no organisation bigger than any other and we encourage discussions, networking and partnership working to be a true democracy with each voice as important as any other.
