Continuing Professional Development courses for the Arts Sector

This summer, the Worcestershire Arts Partnership launches, a series of four professional development opportunities for those working in the Arts in Worcestershire.
 
The courses will feature both externally invited and local speakers who have been asked to share their expertise, learning and best practice for the benefit of the arts community.

All the courses will take place in the Guild Hall, Worcester from 10am to 12.30pm.  There will be refreshments available and Wi-Fi.

The first session will take place on Wednesday 11 July and features speakers Deborah Kermode, Chief Executive and Artist Director MAC Birmingham and Clare Purcell Assistant Director at Meadow Arts on Business Planning for Success in the Arts.  Creating a Business Plan is a vital step to generating funding and audiences for artistic work, but not everyone knows how to produce one. 

Then on Wednesday 12 September Sarah Gee, Managing Partner Indigo Ltd and Manda Graham Director of Equal Vision will talk about Business resilience and sustaining your arts organisation.

There are two further sessions on Wednesday 14 November and Wednesday 6^th February 2019.

Arts and Health Symposium

New Prescriptions, the sub group of Worcestershire Arts Partnership, is holding a free Arts and Health Symposium on Tuesday 5 June 9.30am to 2.30pm in The Studio Theatre, The Hive, Worcester.

Guest Speakers are Rachel Adams from Wyldwood Arts speaking on Intergenerational Arts and Health and Lucy Chick Advanced Public Health Practitioner speaking about Social Prescribing and the arts in Worcestershire.

There will also be an open space event to share ideas about collaborative working.

Performances will include 'Cognition’ by Inter-Act from Reaction Theatre Makers and an intergenerational dance piece from EveryBODY Dance. Sight Concern will also present some photos of their latest exhibition.

Voices and Visions 2018 Exhibition

The Voices and Visions Exhibition will be returning to the Cathedral once again to celebrate the creativity of children and young people in Worcestershire.  It's a wonderful opportunity for children and young people to showcase their art work in the beautiful surroundings of the Worcester Cathedral.

Now in its 19th year, Voices and Visions has become a yearly fixture in the school calendar and brings together 45 schools in an exhibition that demonstrates the wealth of talent that can be found in the County.

This year schools have been working on the theme of 'Acts of Kindness', acknowledging all the good deeds people have done, no matter how big or small.

For the first time this year, Meadow Arts have been contributing to Voices and Visions by placing Creative Practitioners in four local schools. Fort Royal Community Primary School, Blackwell First School, Regency High School and Stanley Road Primary School have been working with Sarah Edwards, Mark Riley and Sarah Fereday to create new art work specifically for the exhibition.

 

The Exhibition runs from May19 to June 17 in the Cloisters at Worcester Cathedral during normal opening hours.

Family Art Day at The Hive

Family Art Day at The Hive

Families are invited to come to The Hive and take part in a drop-in art workshop to create a giant totem pole on Saturday 3 March from 11am – 2pm. The structure will allow children’s artworks to be stacked on top of each other and create a piece that evolves through the course of the day.

The workshop will be led by Creative Practitioner Sarah Edwards, an experienced Worcester based leader, who will work with the families and take inspiration from the new papercrete and Bonsai sculptures currently on display at The Hive.

Meadow Arts is running the workshop based on the work ‘The Long Afternoon of Earth’ Bonsai sculptures, created by international artists in residence Heather and Ivan Morison.

Sarah Edwards said: “Everyone who takes part in the project will make a piece of work to go onto the structure and participants can create something as simple or as complex as they like. The work could take many forms and will be prompted by questions such as ‘tell us what you know’, topics such as the environment, space ,travel, oceans, history, music etc… will be used; some serious and some fun and playful.”

Steve Wilson from Meadow Arts, said: “This will be a really enjoyable workshop which is suitable for all ages. Simply come along from 11-2pm and take part and be part of creating something really special with Meadow Arts and Sarah.”

Meetings with The Hive staff, students, users and groups that frequent this vibrant and busy library inspired the project, commissioned by Meadow Arts. Heather & Ivan Morison looked at what the people of Worcester read and they opened their process up to the Fine Art students of University of Worcester, who followed and participated in this live, unique project.

The artists’ sculptural works complement the architecture of the building and convey a sense of the varied environments in which the act of reading occurs for different people.

 
The Hive was the first library in Europe to house both a university book collection and a public lending library, and the artists have been using this fascinating intersection between academia and civic life to develop this new work for 2018.

Theatre Directing Workshop

Jump Start, Worcestershire’s leading new theatre and writing showcase, is delighted to announce a workshop on Directing for Theatre.

 

The workshop will be led by experienced director, Rob Watt and is taking place at The Hive in Worcester on Saturday 17^th February from 1.30pm to 4.30pm in the Studio Space.

 

Jump Start is a project funded by the Arts Council England and Worcestershire County Council and co-ordinated by the Worcestershire Arts Partnership and Worcestershire County Council.  It has so far showcased over 35 new plays and performances by theatre makers in the county and wider region.

 

Jump Start co-ordinators Steve Wilson and Lee Farley are excited at the prospect of the workshop. Steve said: "We are really delighted to having someone like Rob running the workshop and we hope that theatre makers from the county will really support the workshop."

Meadow Arts, an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, require Creative Practitioners to work with schools, universities & colleges as well as the wider public to plan, deliver and evaluate contemporary arts projects as part of the Meadow Arts Inspires Programme.

About Meadow Arts and Meadow Arts Inspires

Meadow Arts brings unique contemporary art projects to places where art is not usually shown, supporting artists by commissioning new work and creating inspiring events and exhibitions. Based in Shropshire the organisation works predominately in Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Through its Learning programme, Meadow Arts Inspires, Meadow Arts works with schools, colleges, universities and artists to create education projects that are tailored to the needs of each education establishment. Recent projects have included working with a whole school group to create a Mandala with students from the Royal Grammar School in Worcester and creating craft items to be sold with young people (18 plus) at Chadsgrove School in Bromsgrove.

Your role

Our Creative Practitioners play a key role in running our programme. As a skilled practitioner you will be responsible for planning and delivering education and engagement projects with us. This will include responding to briefs, meeting with our Education & Engagement Officer, Steve Wilson and the individual schools and colleges, agreeing on dates and then running the individual project. You will be required to evaluate the project with us, to ensure that there have been positive and proven learning outcomes.

Your skills

We are looking for Creative Practitioners with the following skills and experience

• Ability to develop and implement projects from a creative brief
• Ability to evaluate projects
• Knowledge of Contemporary Visual Arts and the wider arts scene
• Knowledge of the school curriculum at all Key Stage Levels
• Experience of working within an education setting
• Experience of working with the wider general public
• Knowledge of accreditation including Arts Awards and Arts Mark
• In addition we require you to have your own transport and have a current DBS Certificate as well as your own Public Liability Insurance.

Our Role

We will support you throughout your work within schools and wider engagement work. You will be profiled on our new webpage and we will actively promote you to our many partners.

If you are chosen for any of our projects we pay a highly competitive rate of £250 per day and additional travel and expenses costs where appropriate.

Deadline approaching - Calling Visual Artists and Designers

Thames Festival Trust are looking for a Worcestershire based artist/designer to deliver visual art based workshops in secondary schools across Worcestershire between March - June 2018 as part of Rivers of the World, our international arts and education project.

The programme involves the pupils working with an artist or designer on their local river through environmental, economic and cultural learning and themes to learn and gather ideas that are channeled creatively into drawings, paintings, photographs and other visual media which result in the creation of large-scale work of art. The artwork is then curated and exhibited in partner schools outside the UK and along the River Thames walkway in September as part of Totally Thames. Since its creation in 2005, Rivers of the World has been delivered in over twenty countries around the world.

Worcester Stands Tall

Calling all artists!

Decorate a giraffe with Worcester Stands Tall

Would you like the chance to decorate an unusual type of canvas as part of a major public art showcase arriving in Worcester next summer?

 
There is still time left for artists – both amateur and professional – to get involved with Worcester Stands Tall and submit designs for its loveable giraffe sculptures. 

Worcester Stands Tall will see at least 25 beautifully decorated giraffe sculptures form an art trail through the city streets and public spaces for 10 weeks in summer 2018. 

Currently, each 2.5-metre tall giraffe sculpture is naked – but, with the help of artists from across the country, they will soon be covered in bespoke artwork.

Imaginations have been running wild and some fantastic giraffe designs have already been submitted by artists from across the country – and you could get involved too! 

So, if you like the sound of this project, get your creative thinking cap on, draw up your designs and submit them to us before the deadline of Friday, 5th January 2018.

 
All the details, including the artist fee, design guidelines and templates are in the artists' information pack which can be downloaded from the Worcester Stands Tall website. Instructions on how to submit your designs are also in the pack.

Jump Start Showcase

This month will see the return of the Jump Start Showcase.

The second event  of this innovative project , which brings together local writers, directors and performers to present new theatre, will feature a new theatre showcase as well as a writer’s workshop.

Funded by Arts Council England, and part of the Worcestershire Arts Partnership's 1000 Arts Strategy, the project is an opportunity for writers to try out new ideas, experiment with different forms, integrate into the local arts networks, and get feedback from fellow arts practitioners and discerning audiences.

The showcase takes place at Malvern Cube at 7pm on 9 November.  The event is free but donations will be accepted. 

The Malvern Cube will also be hosting the first in a series of workshops designed to support local writers’ development.

The workshop takes place at Malvern Cube on 12 November from 5-7pm and will be led by Pentabus Theatre Company Artistic Director, Sophie Motley, on the theme of 'How to Engage with Rural Communities - making collaborative theatre'. 

Open to theatre artists of all shapes and sizes from dramaturgs to musicians via writers and performers and designers, this workshop will explore different methods of creatively engaging with and responding to rural communities and issues.

Please feel free to bring with you any stories, encounters, or ideas you have had about rural issues / communities. If you are a musician, do feel free to bring an instrument. 

Elaine Knight, Arts Development Assistant, said: "These are wonderful opportunities for local writers to learn from experienced specialists who have been working in this field for many years. They will be challenging, innovative, organic and locally sourced so don't miss out on this opportunity to see these aspiring new playwrights, and learn from theatre experts."

Artrix has been selected to be part of The Big Give Christmas Challenge!

 Artrix is delighted to have been selected to be part of The Big Give’s Christmas Challenge this year; the UK’s biggest online match funding campaign. Find out more here: https://secure.thebiggive.org.uk/project/28556.  

We hope to secure funds for a two year mental health programme, Disorder, including developing further the Hyped theatre production and delivering a Mental Health Youth Arts Festival, featuring the creative work of young people from Worcestershire schools, colleges, universities and youth groups.

Thank you to our pledgers, funders and champions to date. So far, we have raised £4253 in pledge and champion funds. This means we now have a challenge to raise a further £4253 in online donations in the week of 28^th November – 5^th December, 2017. Our overall (Big Give) fundraising target is £8506. The heat is on as we need to make this target in order to access pledge and champion funds!

Introduction

The summer seems a long time ago as I write this on a cold, murky late September morning. Yet there is something of a new-year feeling with lots of arts resolutions in place. What better way of a new start than having a new person in place and so I say 'Welcome Elaine Knight'. Elaine is the new Part Time 'Arts Development Assistant' for Worcestershire County Council. She will be managed by Trevor Jones and despite listening to my jokes is still smiling. In between jokes I asked Elaine a few questions!

 

Hi Elaine – tell us about yourself?

I lived and worked in Lincolnshire for 26 years before moving to Worcestershire. I was the Performing Arts Manager for artsNK, an arts development agency based in Sleaford, in the heart of Lincolnshire.  My role included; developing the performing arts programme across North Kesteven, overseeing the artistic programme of The Terry O Toole Theatre (a 200 seater venue), managing a dance and older people's programme across the county, overseeing the Lincolnshire One Venue's programme which aims to connect young people and venues together in a more meaningful way and codirected a Creative People and Places Programme, Transported, in the south of the county.

Originally I trained as dancer and have always worked in rural areas, creating opportunities for people to take part in the arts who don't always have access to them.

 What attracted you to working in Worcestershire?

 Worcestershire feels a little bit similar to Lincolnshire -  A rural county made up of a city, a number of market towns and large areas of more isolated villages.  As someone who believes in creating opportunities for people who don't always have access to the arts it was important to me to move to somewhere where the arts didn't always take place in dedicated arts venues and there was the opportunity to develop a programme in non-traditional venues like village halls, schools and libraries. 

 What are you looking forward to most?

I really like the way the arts in Worcestershire work together through the Arts Partnership so I am looking forward to getting to know how that works and how together we can put the arts at the centre of people's lives.

 Good stuff and I know Elaine will be a brilliant addition to the WAP er family/massive/group.

 Updates

Arts and Health (New Prescriptions)

The NP Group, led by Jenny Davis, have been very busy with an event called 'Conversations About Death and Dying'. This was undertaken in partnership with Dr Maggie Keeble, who has a great interest in supporting people in their final years. We had a mixture of arts and health professionals at the event at the Hive on the 20^th September and we listened to a great presentation from Sharon Hudson from Birmingham YODO (You Only Die Once) who showed what our Brum friends are up too as well as some terrific arts interventions in this area. Despite the subject matter the event was both serious but also light hearted. Interesting fact – the mortality rate for those who will read this will be 100%. It was also the first project where someone emailed me as Dr Wilson too.

 Economy

Last night (the 28^th of September) saw 15 Festival providers get together to see if as a group (a flock perhaps) of Festivals can get together to share good practice, ideas and collaboration. Led by Oliver Carpenter, we had a great evening, with live music and free beer from the Teme Valley Brewery. There was lots of enthusiasm and energy and our next question is 'what next' but there was a real drive and purpose to it all. Big thanks to Oliver for driving this.

 Jump Start Performance

Our next event is planned for the Feast Festival at The Malvern Cube. There will be two events. The first is a new showcase of new plays. Lee and I read through 27 submissions of new work which we have shortlisted to 5. The showcase will be on Thursday 9^th of November and on the Sunday 12^th there will be a workshop by Pentabus Theatre in writing for a Rural audience.

Inspiring Futures in the Arts

Debbie Birch and yours truly have been busy recruiting artists for our project funded by the West Mercia Police Crime Commissioner. We have recruited 7 new artists from a variety of art forms and are ready to go! We now have great partnerships with Probation, YSS and County Council Children Services.

Vamos and Forthright Productions (Jest a Minute)

I was so proud to recently attend shows from two of our wonderful theatre companies. Vamos performed Finding Joy at The Courtyard in Hereford and Forthright at The Everyman in Cheltenham. Two excellent shows from companies who we should be proud of.

 

Last but least…

This is my last newsletter as County Arts Officer. When I took over, the Arts Partnership was 6 local authority officers. Now thanks to you all we have over 150 active 'members' and a thousand or so followers. To see this happen has been inspiring. Thank you. It really has been a pleasure. – Steve

Artist Brief for ‘Create Your Way to Losing Weight’

Create Your Way to Losing Weight is an exciting, new pilot arts project being run by Worcestershire County Council, Worcestershire Arts Partnership and Wychavon District Council in the Evesham area.  The aim of the project is to provide high quality and enjoyable arts activities for adults who are thinking about losing weight, are on a diet or who want to maintain their weight. It’s a new creative course for people who would like to build up their confidence and self-esteem.

As far as we know a project of this kind has never been run before in Worcestershire so we are breaking new ground here.

We would like to run the project on a weekly basis for a period of up to 10 weeks on a Thursday evening.  It could combine different art forms or focus on 1 art form. We will run various taster sessions for the first workshop and then the group will decide what they want to do.  

The project is free to the participants.  There is also a strong social element within Create Your Way to Losing Weight and each session must contain enjoyable (and good humoured) activities.  Having said that, Create Your Way to Losing Weight is first and foremost an arts project.

We are looking for 1 artist to run a weekly 1.5 hour workshop taking place on a Thursday from the 5th October to 14^th December 2017, not including half term (26 October) from 7 pm to 8.30 p.m. in at least 1 or more of the following artistic systems:

             Visual arts

             Creative writing

£100 per session or £1,000 in total although additional costs can be requested for materials. Plus 2 meetings at £40 a meeting. If however, numbers are low after the first 4 weeks / sessions, we will unfortunately have to end the project.

Dear young musicians, parents and teachers

 

I’m delighted to invite you/your young musician to an exciting, upbeat day of music making on Saturday 30 September 2017.

Whether you're a singer or instrumentalist, on Jazz Saturday, you will receive bespoke support from our three fantastic professional jazz artists (details below) to create a new arrangement of work bringing together these two essential elements of jazz music.

 

Sometimes, the full ensemble – instrumentalists and vocalists – will work together and learn from one another; and at other times, we will split the group to focus on techniques particular to each element. 

 

The key objectives for the vocalists will be about singing in harmony, learning different ways of approaching improvisation including 'scatting', how to improvise over chord changes and what to listen for to ensure a good working relationship when working with instrumentalists.

 

For instrumentalists, the workshop will also explore different improvisation techniques as well as composing from scratch without traditional musical notation, with a focus on learning how to work cooperatively and in harmony with vocals.   

 

Participants will be invited to work in different ways with their instrument and voice, and be given the opportunity to perform informally to parents and friends at the end of the day. The workshop will be delivered in such a way that students at various levels of experience can be involved, have fun and develop their musical understanding, skill and interest in jazz.

 

Jazz Saturday will take place on 30 September at the Lyttelton Well Rooms, Great Malvern.

There are accessible toilet facilities as well as a lift to the first floor room suitable for wheelchair access.

The rooms are situated in the grounds of Great Malvern Priory.

The workshop will be led by three professional jazz musicians and can accommodate up to 20 instrumentalists and 15 vocalists on a first come first served basis.

 

This practical day is part of a series of inspiring jazz programmes being delivered across the county to develop skills and enthusiasm associated with jazz music. Managed by Best of Young Jazz and financially supported by Arts Council England, The Bransford Trust, Severn Arts and The David Morgan Trust; the opportunity is offered free of charge to young jazz musicians across Worcestershire and beyond.

There is room to pull up outside the venue for transferring heavy/bulky instruments. Time there will be limited as this area is shared access for the Lyttleton Rooms and Great Malvern Priory.
