Mouth & Music
On Tuesday 14th January at 8.00pm, Mouth and Music will celebrate its second birthday at the Boar's Head, 39 Worcester Street, Kidderminster. This month's spoken word artist is Billie Spakemon telling stories “Frum the Coal 'ole”. Billie grew up in the Black Country and says he spent a lot of his early life in the coal hole to escape his mother who was chasing him “with a boiler stick”. Acoustic folk singer songwriter Jen Robins will also bring a gutsy blend of spiritual yearning & practical reality, with a touch of humour. MC Heather Wastie invites open mic performers to arrive from 7.30 to book a spot of 5 minutes or 2 songs. The theme for the evening will be Childhood.

Christmas Message
On behalf of the
Worcestershire Arts Partnership we wish you all a peaceful yet creative
Christmas and New Year.
2013 saw the partnership grow
and develop further and we now have over 80 arts and non arts professionals
engaged in the partnership's work. Our partnership with the Canals and River
Trust will see an exciting arts programme in Worcester and Droitwich; our
on-going work with Arts Connect saw 'The Arts Chat' where we met with 30 young
people to discuss how we can work with young people in the county while many of
you attended our funding event 'The Income Generation Game'. Next year we will
look to develop the work of the WAP further and we also plan a number of artist
opportunities across the county. We know that these are difficult and
challenging times for the arts both in Worcestershire and across the country
but we are committed to making the arts prosper in Worcestershire.
We look forward to working
with you all in 2014,
Judith Elkin and Steve Wilson

Trustee Leadership in Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy – Successful sessions in December
Our recent training sessions at the New Art Exchange, Nottingham and the Free Word Centre, London provoked lively, informed and timely discussions across participants from a wide range of organisations. Nicole Newman discussed how English National Opera has developed their board to lead sub-committees in different areas of Development such as Corporate Sponsorship and Development Events, and we heard from Rose Fenton and Prue Skene from the Free Word Centre about their new friends scheme which they have just launched. Matthew Bowcock also provided an insightful perspective from someone who has been both a major donor and on the board of a charity.

We want to hear from you
We've heard some great stories from our Trustee Leadership in Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy Training Seminars of Boards developing fundraising ideas. For example, the London Sinfonietta has moved fundraising to third on its meeting agendas and already has plans to launch a board-supported new major giving programme in January 2014 and is planning further Trustees supported fundraising events throughout 2014. Great news!

Exciting plans for Voices and Visions for 2014.
2013 saw a fantastic Visual Arts Exhibition which was
accompanied by two brilliant and emotional performing arts showcases at
Worcester Cathedral. Some schools had an arts grant to bring practitioners in
and the two evenings were a fantastic success. Then in October we ran Pop
Icons, the search for the best young singer in the county which was won by
Hayley Jones from Redditch. As part of winning the event Hayley will represent
the county in a large scale event called OMG Live which is taking place at The
LG Arena in Worcester next April.
For 2014 we want to build on this and continue to make
Voices and Visions a fantastic arts project for all young people in the county
and those that work with them. Our plans for 2014 are as follows:
To develop the offer for Voices and Visions further by
allowing arts organisations to also be part of the programme and apply for
funding.
To begin with we will have a loose theme for the programme
which will be Heroes and Inspiration. By that we could mean
Stories, Family, Famous People, Unsung Heroes, People from History, Events,
Places, and War etc. It could mean taking an existing project and working out
what you have found so inspiring about it. Please feel inspired by the theme
and to use it to tell us about your work!
There will be two events at The Cathedral. We will continue
to have a Visual Arts Showcase and to accompany this there will be a Performing
Arts Showcase.
We are also delighted to offer up more venues across the
county and we are looking to run smaller events at Libraries and Heritage
Centres across the county. Further information will be given in the New Year
but we hoping that these venues will act as either places where you can find
your Heroes and Inspiration but also have these events showcased there.
In addition to this there will be a grant pot where schools
and arts organisations can bid for small grants of up to £500 for either an
artist(s) or to run an event. We envisage that take up for these grants will be
high.
We are running an event
at County Hall on Thursday 30th January at County Hall from 4.30pm
where I will give you more information about the programme and you will also be
able to meet with partners in Libraries, Schools and Museums. Please can you
let my colleague Diane Thomson know whether you plan to attend no later than
the 23rd of January. Diane's email is dethomson@worcestershire.gov.uk; it would be great if you can come along to be part of all of this!
Best Wishes
Steve Wilson
