Job Opportunity - Freelance Artistic Director, The Canal & River Trust

Freelance Artistic Director

Contract: Part-time Freelance: September 2016 – September 2018

Location: Home Based / Project Meetings in Worcester and surrounding areas

Fee: £250 - £400 per day (£21,000 for full contract term to include travel and expenses)

Commissioning budget: £110,000 plus

About the role

The Canal & River Trust is developing an inspirational two-year contemporary arts programme focused on the 21-mile circle of waterways known as the Worcestershire Ring. Working with a small steering group and project manager on a part-time freelance basis, you will curate and oversee the production and installation of five innovative ‘gateway’ artworks at key locations around the Ring. You will also oversee the delivery of a vibrant participatory programme that enriches the lives of local people and visitors to the Ring.

This is a unique opportunity to lead the commissioning and showcasing of outstanding contemporary artworks in unexpected places. As Artistic Director, you will encourage artists to truly engage with these extraordinary waterways and to respond with their own creative vision, whether performance-based, temporary or semi-permanent, interior or outdoors.

The project is supported by Arts Council England and receives regional and cultural oversight, funding and direction from a consortium of cultural partners including a university, local authorities, cultural organisations, and education and tourism bodies. It is part of the Canal & River Trust’s Arts on the Waterways programme.

About you

We are looking for a visionary producer, curator or agency with significant experience of devising, shaping, leading and delivering high-quality contemporary arts projects of national or international significance. Your track record should include working successfully with multiple stakeholders, developing and managing other arts specialists, and stimulating meaningful community partnerships. The ability to set strategy and manage budgets is also very important.

About us

The Canal & River Trust is the guardian of 2,000 miles of historic waterways across England and Wales, caring for the nation’s third largest collection of listed structures, as well as museums, archives, and hundreds of important wildlife sites. The Arts on the Waterways programme was initiated by the Trust in 2012 in partnership with Arts Council England, and more recently with strategic support from the Arts Council of Wales. We work with talented artists and leading arts institutions which are based near waterways to inspire more people to experience and appreciate our waterways https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/waterway-arts
