OPPORTUNITIES

Art & Design Portfolio Preparation Workshops, Redditch
Art &Design Portfolio Preparation Course, run by professional Artist and Illustrator Peter Tinkler. This 10 week course is specifically aimed at assisting students in putting together a relevant portfolio of work for application to a Foundation, or Degree level Art and Design programme. Each student will receive individual attention to bring out their personal best. One to one consultations will also be available, on a first come, first serve basis. Classes run for two hours, costing £10 per person, per session. They are held every Thursday, at the Inkberrow Design Centre, Redditch.

The Unfinished Artists Workshops continue at mac, Birmingham, We Are Unfinished Artists
We have spent the last few months collecting unfinished things. We have paintings, clothes, stories, poems, plays, film, music and other wonderful items, all of them incomplete. If you have any artistic or crafty leanings WE NEED YOU to help us finish them. You will have total freedom to take the pieces in whatever direction you desire. You can use them as inspiration for something completely new, you could rip a painting up and turn it into a sculpture or you could attempt to faithfully follow the original artist's vision for their piece. We will give you the same information the artists gave us but how you use that information, if at all, is your decision. The Unfinished Artist Workshop will run weekly at mac Birmingham every Tuesday at 7.30pm.

European Work Experience, Gecko Programmes, Wolverhampton 
Gecko Programmes in Wolverhampton have a number of work experience opportunities for 18-24 year olds available as part of the Leonardo Programme which allows people working in the creative, media, heritage and cultural industries to complete work placements in Europe. This is funded by the European Commission. Placements have been organised for Spain, Malta, Italy and Portugal. Funding for the preparation, flights, accommodation, language training and subsistence is available. 

AA2A at Hereford College of Arts
As part of the National Artists Access to Art Colleges scheme Hereford College of Arts are offering four placements to artists and designer-makers, giving them the opportunity to undertake a period of research or realise a project using university workshop and supporting facilities. Payback Royalties for Visual Artists
Has your work been used in a book, magazine or on TV? If so, you're probably eligible for Payback royalties, in addition to other copyright royalties you may have already received. That's because Payback covers secondary uses of your images, such as photocopying. Every year we collect these royalties and pay a share to eligible artists who've signed up to the scheme. It’s worth it: last year the average payment was £285.

ART vs REHAB launches free Critical Tool Kits
ART vs REHAB is a platform for those working creatively within addiction, the criminal justice system, homelessness and mental health. It is a catalyst for criticality and change, based on the principles of open innovation and collaborative practice. Conceived by artist and researcher, Hannah Hull, the initiative aims to strengthen the relationship between art and rehabilitation.

Creative employment programme, Arts Council England
The Creative employment programme will help young unemployed people find paid entry level work in the arts and cultural sector.  The programme will support up to 6,500 new apprenticeships, pre-apprenticeships and paid internships across the arts and cultural sector. The Arts Council is opening a commissioned grant for applications to find a national provider who will deliver the programme...

Hidden Collections: From Archive to Asset

Over the Course of the 2012/13 academic year this AHRC-funded programme is offering postgraduate research students a unique opportunity to develop skills in reinterpreting archival material (Image, Object, Performance and Theatre, Corpora and Film) in the context of digitisation and widening access to such material through strategies of public engagement. The programme is open to postgraduate research students from the Arts and Humanities. Deadline: 20 September at 5:00pm

Museums Worcestershire are running a series of temporary projects in the ex-Library space on the ground floor of the Worcester City Museum building. STEP Beyond Travel grants, ECF Mobility Fund
Travel grant for art professionals, cultural operators, cultural researchers, cultural journalists and cultural translators from all European countries. The ECF mobility fund, STEP BEYOND, encourages travel by making a contribution to travel costs, visa costs, and, in certain cases, accommodation costs of those awarded a grant. The grants are open to applicants in the first 10 years of a professional career in their relevant field…

The Jonathan Ruffer Curatorial Grants Programme
The Jonathan Ruffer Curatorial Grants programme helps curators working with fine and applied art collections.The Art Fund will award grants totaling £50,000 annually through this scheme.Grants aim to help sustain and promote curatorial development and collections-based research through making grants to individuals. Open to curators who work across the full range of fine and applied art collections in museums and galleries that hold at least provisional accreditation and are open to the public. Also available to researchers, art historians and academics from other relevant and related disciplines, retired curators, and other museum professionals. £30,000 Sky Arts Ignition: Futures Fund
Sky Arts is once again offering five young artists aged 18-30 £30,000 each to fund their work for a full year as part of the Sky Arts Ignition: Futures Fund – in association with IdeasTap. The fund is designed to develop your creative practice and help take your work to the next level. We’ll pair you with a mentor from Sky to help you develop your networks, skills and knowledge in the arts and the commercial sector, and support you through Sky’s platforms.  The fund is open to applications from the following fields:
• Visual art: fine artists, sculptors, animators and video artists
• Creative producingdo you bring together disparate parts of culture in exciting and innovative ways? This category is open to creative producers working in visual arts, theatre, film and performance/dance. Deadline: Wednesday 19 December.
 
Pollock-Krasner Foundation
The Foundation welcomes applications from visual artists who are painters, sculptors and artists who work on paper, including printmakers. There are no deadlines. The Foundation encourages applications from artists who have genuine financial needs; grants are intended for a one-year period of time. Artists are required to submit a cover letter, an application, and images of current work. Professional exhibition history will be taken into consideration.

Digital R&D Fund for the Arts 
The Digital R&D Fund for the Arts is a strategic partnership between the Arts Council, Nesta and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). It’s unique in encouraging collaboration between the arts, digital technology providers and the research community in order to undertake experiments from which the wider arts and cultural sector can learn. The £7 million fund will be made available over three years to support research and development projects that use digital technology to enhance arts' audience reach and/or explore new business models. The fund focuses on the following key themes: user generated content and social media, digital distribution and exhibition, mobile location and games, data and archives, resources and education and learning. Applications are now open.

Action Research Bursary – FINAL CALL FOR APPLICATIONS, Yorkshire Artspace
Yorkshire Artspace is currently seeking applications from early career stage artists/practitioners who are interested in developing ideas and work in a social context. The action research bursary is part of our wider Starter Studio Programmes and provides time, space & money to research, actively test ideas and explore approaches to socially engaged practice in a 'real-life' setting.  4 places are available per annum for early career stage artists/practitioners to test and develop work/ideas that are socially engaged/community focused and respond to Parson Cross/Manor neighbourhoods of Sheffield.  Closes Monday 1 October 2012

Art & Design commissions, London Borough of Waltham Forest
Aligned to the Walthamstow Shop Front Improvements scheme, the STREET GALLERY project will commission a rolling programme of innovative, temporary, site-specific artworks for a shop façade and/or rooftop. Public Art Commission, The Witham Hall Ltd
The Witham Hall wishes to commission an artist to develop and deliver a new permanent public art work to mark the redevelopment of The Witham and help to celebrate this new chapter in Barnard Castle’s history. The appointed artist will need to involve children from a local primary school in some aspects of the design, development or production of the work. The budget for the final commission is £4,500, inclusive of all fees, expenses, workshop costs, materials, production costs, transport and installation, and VAT where appropriate. The funding is available from the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund. Craft Fair 2012, The New Art Gallery Walsall

or-bits.com is inviting artists to submit work for inclusion in the project 128kbps objects, a week-long internet radio broadcast on basic.fm that will explore the idea of objects in transformation.  The project 128kbps objects will look into contemporary notions of object-hood across a variety of artistic practices, mediums and sites, investigating the potentials of displaying objects sonically. It will take into considerations the characteristics of the web-tool employed, the internet radio, such as the erasure of visual language, the loss of direct interaction with artistic content, the relationship between speed and quality, for which, for instance, all the sonic data above quality threshold of 128 kilo bytes per second are cancelled out….

Photomonth Photo: Call for Entries
Photomonth – East London International Photography Festival is pleased to announce the call for entries to the open photography show to be held at the Rich Mix Gallery in Shoreditch. Entry is open to all kinds of photographers, professional and non-professional, students and young people from all over the UK and the rest of the world. There are no restrictions on subject matter or numbers of entries made per photographer. Fees are £10 per image or at the concessionary rate of £5 per image and must be pre-paid with your submission. Concessions apply to full time students, the unemployed on benefits and pensioners. Deadline: 8 October 2012


Coloursoup
Coloursoup is a new online gallery for original art. They are currently building their community of  UK-based artists, and are looking for artworks to exhibit in the following media: Painting, Drawing, Original Prints, Mixed Media. There are no upfront charges for showing the selected work, and they pay all costs associated with packaging and shipping work which has been sold.  Their commission  is  £40 + 35% of the retail price of artwork sold (this includes VAT). The selection panel is held monthly, submit all entries by 5pm of the second Tuesday of each month.

Call for proposals: Bloc, Sheffield
Bloc initiates shows for the exhibition programme but also welcome proposals direct from artists, working in all media. Applications should include a proposal, CV, artist statement and supporting material. Committee meets monthly, please post submissions.

RESURGENCE: Open Submission
Photographic works must focus on ‘life on the river’ around the immediate area of Trinity Buoy Wharf London E14 OJW. Trinity Buoy Wharf  must feature as an element of the photograph. Photographs can include reportage, portraiture, abstracts or panoramas, that communicate the idea of resurgence as a strong concept of modern ‘life on the river’ in this part of London. Free to enter and three prizes will be awarded. Deadline: 28 October 2012 


Rugby Open 2012: Call for Artists 
Application forms are now available for the Rugby Open 2012, an exhibition showcasing the best in the local regions art and craft. Kids of Dada is a new curated online destination for collectors to discover and purchase contemporary art from around the world. Our members-only online gallery features unique artworks and limited edition items from exceptional artists, and galleries. Kids of Dada's registration process is now open. Call for Papers/Presentations/Performances on Art & Anthropology - A Parallel Universe Day Seminar, Arnolfini
Wednesday 28th November, 2-5pm. It is increasingly common for artists to explore anthropological and ethnographic concerns in their practice. At the same time, artists themselves have become a subject for study for contemporary anthropologists. In this symposium, researchers working in and between both fields will come together to explore links, friction and potential in a celebration of cross-disciplinary exchange.  Coordinated in response to Arnolfini's Parallel Universes season, the event will include presentations and facilitated discussion, and is open to all. Proposals are invited exploring any aspect of cross-over between art and anthropology, from postgraduate students and early-career independent practitioners. Deadline: October 31 2012
Christmas exhibition opportunity, The Brewhouse, Burton-upon-Trent
10 November – 24 December 2012. We are now seeking submissions for selection for our mixed Christmas Show for 2012. This is a selling show, and we are looking for affordable work up to around £50 maximum retail price per item, ideal as a Christmas gift. The Brewhouse is a popular multi use arts centre with a 233 seat theatre, small cinema space, workshop and meeting rooms as well as the gallery spaces, where we hope to build a reputation for showing high quality and thought provoking new work. Re Act - Call for submissions: open call
Act series, an ongoing digital art project designed to encourage criticism of contemporary politics. The exhibit Re Act is an expansion of this concept, and will be part of a curatorial residency at The Market Studios in Dublin, Ireland. Artists are invited to use the Act tools for production/ inspiration/ objects of critique to generate artwork, this could be any political commentary relevant to anywhere in the world. The original Act project included the development of five digital 'tools' or 'guides', which were then applied to political content to create artwork. Derby City Open Application
Applications for the 2012 Derby City Open Exhibition are now available. Input Residency, Meter Room
The Input residency programme at Meter Room provides independent curators and artist-run organisations with 24 hour access to the 1400 square feet project space to use as their own studio in which to generate new collaborations and site-specific responses. Wendover Residency
The Center for Land Use Interpretation operates a residence program to support the development of new interpretive methodologies and ideas. The program is open to artists, researchers, theorists, or anyone who works with land and land use issues in an innovative and engaging manner. Residents primarily work out of the CLUI facilities at Wendover, Utah, and explore and interpret the landscape of that remarkable desert region. Conjunction 12, Stoke on Trent
October- December 2012
Conjunction 12 is the third biennial of contemporary art festival in Stoke-on-Trent. The theme for this year’s event is THE ART OF SURVIVAL. The festival will be held across Stoke-on-Trent city centre making use of existing and temporary art spaces. It is a chance to showcase and develop new contemporary artwork in a public setting. In 2012 the biennial will look at ideas of survival within; the natural world, the economy, and the artworld and will consider the role of conservation, recognition of resources and grass-roots activity in creating future sustainability. We will cover the ruthless Darwinian notion of ‘survival of the fittest’ whilst also looking at the often subjective practice of museum collecting and archiving. Eye Candy Festival

Eye Candy is a visual pop culture festival which will be showcasing illustration, art and design through a programme of events in the form of exhibitions and meet-ups etc. There will also be workshops and a talks program with industry heavyweights. Admission Free.  Pete James, Head of Photographs at Birmingham Central Library talks to Andrew Lacon and Stuart Whipps about the work they are making for REFERENCE WORKS: the Library of Birmingham Photography Project. The project, Birmingham’s largest photography commission, sees four photographers and four students/graduates from Birmingham City University making creative responses to the existing and new library building. The discussion will outline the scope of the commission; describe the process of making new work and the vital role of the Library’s nationally and internationally significant collections at the heart of the new iconic cultural institution.
The event is the first in a series of Photographers Talks linked to REFERENCE WORKS, the Library of Birmingham Photography Project.

The Art of Listening, Supersonic Festival

Artists work in the museum: histories, interventions and subjectivity
This conference will bring together artists, curators, historians and museum professionals to explore the history of the artist as museum professionals, the museum environment and archive as the content of artistic production, the hidden subjectivity of the many artists working in museums and galleries alongside their practice and dynamic roles they play in 21st century museums and galleries. Thursday 25 & Friday 26 October 2012, 10.30am - 4.30pm, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. A two-day workshop opportunity for disabled and non-disabled artists to reflect on their own practice with an interest in working with the body as a potential research source or actual material - whether this is in visual arts, performance, theatre, writing, dance, music. Creative Shift Training Programme
Creative Shift is a boutique training, consultancy and coaching business, using artists and their work to inform and inspire profound and profitable business and personal change. They are offering a number of half-day and full-day courses in networking, delivering presentations, starting your creative business, tendering processes and negotiating contracts.
